Whiteshell River Trail

Off the east side of the Mantario trail parking lot lies the trailhead of the Whiteshell River Trail. Much less intimidating at only 2.7km, I thought this would be a great taste of the area for my family.
And it was. Indeed, with toddlers in tow we experienced all the euphoric highs, as well as the devastating lows, that can be experienced on a trail of any length in the area.
The river itself was stunning, a relaxed flow moving gently from pool to pool, enticing us to stay and watch, listen.
After we’d filled our senses, however, the trail turned back upward, and little legs were put to the test. The sun, once sparkling gently on the cool water, now beat against our tired frames.
Our youngest begged to be carried.
Eventually we tired of coaxing and helped her out.
As I write, this area is closed for threat, whether feared or realized, of wildfire. What remains of this and other beloved trails and forests in the area?
For now we’ll hold our memories and hope for rain.
