This summer I was enticed to explore the world on stand-up paddleboard (SUP), and also dream about adventures to be had on a SUP. I realized a first step towards some of these dreams would be to tackle some challenges in my own backyard.
Last year I tackled the Red River Paddle Challenge in a canoe with an adventure buddy.
This year I decided to try it on a SUP.
After only one (albeit epic) trial on a race SUP on the Red, I found myself amongst a crowd of boats to the sound of “See you in Lockport!” and began the challenge to paddle the 44km from St. Vital to the locks.
Seven-and-a-half hours later, after only one dunk into cool brown waters (and countless near-dunkings), I landed in Lockport as one of the final finishers of the 2026 edition.
