Garmin didn’t come to me asking for ideas on gathering real-time running data to help runners achieve their goals, but if they had, this is one (among other) (and for skiing) of the ideas I would have offered.
Runners these days put a lot of stock into the numbers, with heart rate monitors, Grade Adjusted Pace, producivity ratings, all being pulled together in an attempt to describe: how was your run?
There’s a place for data, but there’s also a place for stripping back the numbers to reclaim the feeling, the enjoyment, and the poetry of a good run.
If you’re getting caught up in the data, could I recommend, try describing your run like the wind sock hat might. Was it flailing behind you? Is the sweat band thoroughly soaked?
Maybe, for today, that’s enough.
