On sharing

Share the road, truck and bike

Bikes are coming out of storage and hitting the streets and sidewalks of town, which leads me to think about how we share our lanes of transport.

I’m proud to be part of a family who values biking, and love taking 2 wheels (x5) to the park, or feeling the fresh air rather than AC in a quick drive to the store, but biking, particularly with young riders, on streets dominated by large vehicles feels… vulnerable.

As I mentioned before, WalkingScore.com claims “Steinbach does not have many bike lanes.” Which is quite true.

But it’s more complex than bike lanes. This year I’m seeing electric scooters, e-bikes, skateboards, segues, other kinds of scooters, all of which don’t fit neatly into our categories of walking vs driving.

It’s like we need a spectrum of lanes based on speed, or urgency… or maybe it’s like a game of Plinko:

How do you move around your town? How can we make our towns safe for everyone, and have fun getting ourselves from point A to point B?
