Memories of Mantario

When Greg, Cory, and I finally snuck in a Mantario run on a rare warm November last fall, we had no idea what would happen to this wilderness area just a few months later.
Six months later, half of the trail has burned, questions abound as to the future of the trail, and so many who love this trail are left wondering whether it will ever look the same in their lifetime.

This map poster, which got out into the world a few weeks after our November trip, made me realize how many people out their love this trail.
Within days of dropping off my first batch at Big Sky, Caroline texted saying, “I think we’re going to need more.”
One hiker ordered 10 to share with his hiking buddies, remembering a recent hike.
This map represented something about many people’s experience in this place – the good, the bad, the beautiful, buzzing, soggy, laughing, crying, sore legs and shoulders, memories from this Manitoba gem. And I’ve been so glad to connect with many of you for whom Mantario holds something special.

This trail is a thread connecting us to a patch of wilderness, and also connecting all of us together in some interesting way.
If you didn’t get one of these posters yet, there are still some available at Big Sky, or order one below and I’ll get it to you (will arrange shipping if you’re further from Steinbach or Winnipeg).
And hopefully we’ll see you on this trail again soon.
