Loaves and Fishes

I was introduced to the work of David Whyte recently. In reading his poetry, I came across a beautiful little poem called Loaves and Fishes.

This is not
the age of information.

This is not
the age of information.

Forget the news,
and the radio,
and the blurred screen.

This is the time
of loaves
and fishes.

People are hungry
and one good word is bread
for a thousand.

It’s a wonder that, in an ages where the answer to any question can be found with a tap of the finger, and the noise of information is constant, we’re still hungry. Still scanning our screens. What are we looking for? Not mere “information”, but maybe a word that creates connection. Connection to ourselves, others, or something deeper.

And what an opportunity, to speak a good word, and satisfy many.
