The Work is the Reward

I just try to warn people who hope to get published that publication is not all that its cracked up to be. But writing is. Writing has so much to give, so much to teach, so many surprises. That thing you had to force yourself to do – the actual act of writing – turns out to be the best part… The act of writing turns out to be its own reward. – Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

We all have goals, and an idea of what is means to have “arrived” or succeeded. Personally, I can’t go more than 2 hours without envying someone who, from the outside, seems to have made it.

Dreams and goals keep us focused and on track. They’re what motivate it to keep pushing through the grind.

It’s funny though, because anyone who’s in that place will tell you that it’s not all you imagine. It seems that arriving isn’t actually the goal at all. The goal is to enjoy the process, the work, the discipline.

Hopefully we can remember that along the way.
