Our Very Hungry Caterpillar

Since the arrival of Olivia (one year ago Saturday!) I’ve had a greater interest in children’s books, and have realized that some of them have some really amazing artwork! The large pages and often very simple images make for some really cool imagery.

One book I’ve been admiring recently is Eric Carle’s “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”. Published in 1969, this book still sells one copy every 30 seconds around the world! The book’s popular in Holland too, where it’s called “Rupsje Nooitgenoeg”. I love the crisp images with really rich textures. Eric Carle created this iconic style by painting tissue paper, then cutting out the shapes.

“I love colour.” – Eric Carle

In the video below Eric Carle describes how the book came to be as well as his painting process. I love this man’s passion for colour.

In prepping for Olivia’s 1st birthday party, we decided have a bit of a “Very Hungry Caterpillar” theme. It’s really fitting since she loves eating (especially if it’s something we’re eating) and crawls around like a little caterpillar. We’ve yet to see whether the caterpillar cupcakes will work out. Wish us luck!
