Give to Love

I’ve been reflecting on this quote for the past couple weeks. I like it because it’s counter intuitive. Normally when we talk about why we love someone, we refer to the things we get from them or how they make us feel. But that’s not actually how love works.

The more we invest, the more we give, the more we love a person. If we’re just looking at how we benefit – what’s in it for us – we’ll never really fall in love with them.

This isn’t just true of relationships, it’s true of our job, our church, or any big cause.

The more we give, the more we love.

CS Lewis said something along the same lines:

“Do not waste time bothering whether you ‘love’ your neighbor; act as if you did. As soon as we do this we find one of the great secrets. When you are behaving as if you loved someone, you will presently come to love him.”
